More of 'The Bridge' Theater Performances
Following Dave's contributions to the award-winning non-profit culture project of a "Theater In The Tunnel," we've got many enquiries with reference to the staging of Rolf Palm's novel "The Bridge" at the genuine location of the ancient Bridge at Remagen remains on the Rhine River.
The bridge became famous on March 7, 1945, when a small advance party of the US 9th Armored Division under the command of German-born lieutenant Karl H. Timmermann successfully captured it (after two unsuccessful demolition attempts by the Germans). The capture caused WWII to end several weeks earlier: As it was the only remaining bridge that led into the German heartlands, its capture is known as "The Wonder Of Remagen." When General Eisenhower got to know his troops had reached the "Berlin Shore" on the eastern toehold in the small medieval village of Erpel, he exclaimed, "The bridge is worth its weight in gold!" It gave the idea for the eponymous Hollywood movie (1969), starring George Segal, Ben Gazzara, and Robert Vaughn.
More performances of the dramatic theater play have been restaged by the professional actors of the Rhineland Palatinate State Theater this summer, and again in the historic scenery of the original old railroad tunnel underneath the imposing basalt rock and close behind the preserved bridge towers. This project started in 2005 and, with all its logistics, is still shouldered solely in an honorary capacity by the village inhabitants in their spare time.
Dave thought it's a bright idea to help building bridges, and he's supporting this conciliatory citizens' culture project.
He met up with the pupils at the village school for 'Dr Dave workshops', gave a benefit concert for the project and inspected the tunnel in the Fall of 2006.
His local fanbase got excited with his musical incitations and are awaiting him back for October. Many of them have been part of this year's theater action again, be it as additional amateur dramatics impersonating the village population of 1945
(who sought shelter inside the tunnel), or just volunteering at the box office.
The tunnel venue is situated on the right bank of the Rhine between Bonn and Koblenz;
with a direct railway connection served from the Cologne/Bonn airport.
For further info see the project's Website linked up by the poster above on the left.
